| Eastern Oregon Timber Harvest Decreases The Annual Timber Harvest Report was released by the Oregon Department of Forestry. Eastern Oregon timber harvests declined by 14 percent in 2005 from the 2004. Logging volumes decreased on National forest lands drove the decline, as harvest fell 37 percent on east-side National forests. Overall, eastside timber harvest was about 569 million board feet, down from 658 million board feet in 2004. Global Log and Plywood Prices Remain Firm According to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) log & plywood global prices remained firm in July reflecting a continued tight supply of logs and plywood. While the higher prices have improved profitability for most companies some companies were unable to obtain supply. Also, fears that buyers would flee to China kept upward pricing pressure somewhat in check. Canfor States That Softwood Lumber Agreement Unlikely Soon The CEO of Cangor Canfor Jim Shepherd is doubtful the softwood lumber agreement will go through as is. "I think an awful lot of work will be done to see if we can salvage this thing, but at this point it seems very discouraging that this will happen," Reuters reported Shepherd as saying. "I think each company and each region feels quite sincere about their needs・f there was one item, or two or three that could get enough support in this country I am not sure what it is at this point," he continued. Where is the softwood lumber agreement? The Canada/ U.S. Softwood Lumber Agreement has become a cloud that everybody is trying to grab but nobody can hold onto. Is this just air or a solid agreement where the details just need to be worked out? The Opinion 250 News reported, " There is a report today the softwood lumber agreement may never get to the House of Commons for a vote. Trade Minister David Emerson is quoted by Canadian Press as saying if the industry and the provinces don't agree with the pact, then it just may not surface in Parliament. The Harper government had indicated the deal would be up for a vote by Members of Parliament and it would be considered a vote of confidence. | Vietnam To Become Major Wood Product Exporter ************************************** ****** The Vietnamese wood product industry could potentially be worth US$5.5 billion by 2010. Vietnam exported US$1 billion worth of wooden products in the first seven months of this year, up 26.6% year-on-year, while shipments to Japan, the EU and the USA have grown fast. Following these positive figures, the Ministry of Trade has announced an export strategy for the next four years, aiming to bring in US$5.5 billion from wood products. According to wood product exporters, the advantages of WTO membership put the target within reach.
